Fencing Installation in Wallasey: Plan It Once, Enjoy It Every Day

A new fence changes the way a garden feels immediately. It can turn an overlooked patio into a comfortable place to sit, make a side passage feel secure and give an untidy boundary a clean line. The result depends on decisions made before the first post goes in: where the fence will stand, what it must withstand and how people will use the space around it.

Merseyside Fencing installs garden fencing and gates across Wallasey and nearby areas. We can replace a failing boundary, build a new one or renew a section that no longer does its job. Our aim is to agree a specification with you, then install the fence to suit the property rather than simply filling the space between two points.

New Featherboard Fence and Bespoke Gate in Poulton, Wallasey

For this garden fencing project on Eastcroft Road in Poulton, Wallasey, the homeowners wanted to replace a very old, flimsy fence and an ageing gate. The existing timber fence had been painted black, but its tired appearance and weak construction meant it was ready for replacement.

Our first task was to remove the old fencing and gate. We took away and disposed of all the unwanted materials, clearing the boundary for the new installation.

We then built a 1800mm-high cross and rail featherboard timber fence, supported by timber posts. Rather than using standard fence panels, this construction uses overlapping featherboard fixed to horizontal rails, allowing the fence to be built around the garden’s layout. The overlapping boards create a solid timber boundary with an attractive, traditional appearance.

To complete the installation, we built and fitted a bespoke timber gate to suit the opening and complement the new fencing. We installed new hinges, latches and a lock, giving the homeowners a practical, secure access point with a coordinated finish.

The transformation was clear: the old black-painted fence and worn gate were replaced with fresh timber fencing and a matching entrance. The new boundary gives the garden a much smarter appearance, while the purpose-built gate completes the installation neatly.

The homeowners were delighted with their attractive new fence and gate. This Eastcroft Road project demonstrates how replacing a tired boundary can improve a garden’s appearance and everyday use, with the fencing and gate designed together as one complete installation.

My husband and I are really impressed with our new fences. We first got in touch with Mark last week, who immediately came and gave us a free quote. He was really friendly and talked us through all the different options. The lads who came and installed the new fences were punctual, professional and friendly. They took away our old fence as well. We are so happy and would 100% recommend Mark and his team for any fencing jobs. We are so impressed with the finished result. Thank you!

One Boundary, Several Possible Solutions

Tell us why you want a new fence. The answer guides the design more effectively than a style name. Perhaps the garden needs more privacy from neighbouring windows. Maybe a dog has found a route through a worn panel. You might want a smart front boundary that still lets light through, or a solid rear fence that separates the garden from a busy path.

We will discuss:

  • The purpose of each section of fencing.
  • Your preferred height and level of screening.
  • The appearance you want from inside the garden.
  • How the fence will meet walls, paving and existing structures.
  • Whether a gate is needed and which way it should open.
  • Any damaged sections you would like us to remove.

Site Checks Before Installation

Wallasey gardens come in many shapes. Some have narrow access; others have long boundaries, paved edges or ground that changes height. A site check lets us measure the run, consider post positions and identify obstacles that may affect the work.

We look at where materials can enter and where old fencing can leave. A shed, established shrub or raised bed might be close to the boundary. If you know about buried cables, pipes or drainage nearby, tell us before work is planned. These details can influence the position or method of installation.

If the boundary position is uncertain, check your deeds and speak with the adjoining owner before arranging changes. We can discuss the physical layout, but a contractor cannot determine legal ownership from the appearance of an old fence.

Picking a Fence System

  • Featherboard fencing uses overlapping timber boards for a continuous, traditional appearance.
  • Timber panels create distinct bays and a regular pattern.
  • Framed closeboard panels offer another solid-looking panel option.
  • Picket fencing defines suitable front areas without full screening.
  • Slatted timber creates a more open or contemporary effect, depending on spacing.

The best option depends on your priorities, the garden layout and the available materials. We can show you what is included in the proposed system, so terms such as “closeboard” or “panel fence” describe a specification rather than a vague promise.

Why the Posts and Base Matter

Most of the visible fence is timber, but the posts determine whether the sections stay aligned. We consider the height, span, ground and exposure when planning post positions and fixing. Timber posts can suit an all-timber design; concrete posts can be paired with compatible panels and gravel boards. We will explain which arrangement we propose and why it fits the job.

Gravel boards create a separation between the fence above and the ground below. They may be timber or concrete, depending on the design. Where the ground slopes, panels and boards also need a planned transition. A neat finish along the top is less convincing if the bottom leaves unexpected gaps.

Removal, Access and the Working Day

Replacing a fence means dealing with the old one first. It helps to agree whether removal and disposal are included in the quotation and whether any existing posts can safely remain. If access is through your home or a narrow passage, mention that early so the work can be planned appropriately.

Please move portable pots, furniture and other belongings away from the boundary before installation where possible. If something cannot be moved, let us know. We can discuss how to protect the surrounding space and what access the team will need.

You should also know which parts of the garden may be temporarily open while the fence is being replaced, particularly if you have children or pets. Planning for that short period makes the job easier for everyone.

A Gate That Belongs in the Plan

A gate is not merely a final panel with hinges. Its opening needs accurate measurement, sound supporting posts and enough clearance to move freely. Think about what passes through regularly: wheelie bins, bikes, gardening equipment or a pushchair. A beautifully finished gate will quickly become frustrating if the opening is too narrow.

We can discuss a timber gate that complements the fence, with suitable hinges and a latch for the way you use it. If you already have a gate, we can assess whether its condition and dimensions allow it to be retained alongside the new fencing.
